I ended up at the Taranog. How appropriate? I just had a fight with my father about him drinking so much that he was about to lose his house, and I go straight to a bar to drink myself.

“My life sucks Lil,” I said.

“I’ve come to learn everyone’s life sucks,” Lily said. “It’s how you deal with your sucky life that makes everyone different.”

I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. I was too buzzed to comprehend any sayings about life. All I knew was, mine sucked and I had no idea how to deal with it.

“Lily, do you have a dad?”

She smiled at me. “Honey, everyone has a dad.”

I laughed. “No, I mean is your dad still in your life?”

“Yeah, he is. He lives in North Carolina though. I talk to him and my mom every Sunday.”

“That’s nice.”

I wished my dad lived in North Carolina. Then I wouldn’t have to be witness to him slowly killing himself.

“What about you? What’s the story with your old man?”

“He’s a pain in my ass,” I said bluntly, earning a laugh from the bartender. “No really. I don’t know what to do with him. I have to be his parent, but he’s too old for me to ground him, so I don’t know how to fix him.”

“Jo, it’s not your job to fix your dad. Sometimes, parents have to just let their kids go and make mistakes. It works the other way around too. That’s the only way we can learn.”

I looked at her seriously. “What if his mistakes get himself killed?”

For once, Lily didn’t have an answer.

“Fancy seeing you here.” I turned to see Steph coming to sit beside me.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

She smiled, giving me an obvious look. “It’s a bar. A bar that a lot of cops go to.”

I blushed, embarrassed. I found myself constantly embarrassing myself in front of Steph. It was an unfamiliar feeling. I didn’t usually get embarrassed so easily.

“What are we drinking?” Lily asked, smiling at the two of us.

“I’ll have what she’s having,” Steph said.

Lily made a face. “The girl is drinking tequila straight from a glass.”

Steph looked at me incredulously. “I thought you didn’t like tequila.”

“I never said I didn’t like tequila. I just knew no one from work should see me on tequila.”

“I’ll take a vodka soda with a lime,” Steph said before turning to look at me. “Everything okay?”

My eyes clouded with tears as I looked at her. “No, everything is terrible.”
