I ended up at the Taranog. How appropriate? I just had a fight with my father about him drinking so much that he was about to lose his house, and I go straight to a bar to drink myself.
âMy life sucks Lil,â I said.
âIâve come to learn everyoneâs life sucks,â Lily said. âItâs how you deal with your sucky life that makes everyone different.â
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. I was too buzzed to comprehend any sayings about life. All I knew was, mine sucked and I had no idea how to deal with it.
âLily, do you have a dad?â
She smiled at me. âHoney, everyone has a dad.â
I laughed. âNo, I mean is your dad still in your life?â
âYeah, he is. He lives in North Carolina though. I talk to him and my mom every Sunday.â
âThatâs nice.â
I wished my dad lived in North Carolina. Then I wouldnât have to be witness to him slowly killing himself.
âWhat about you? Whatâs the story with your old man?â
âHeâs a pain in my ass,â I said bluntly, earning a laugh from the bartender. âNo really. I donât know what to do with him. I have to be his parent, but heâs too old for me to ground him, so I donât know how to fix him.â
âJo, itâs not your job to fix your dad. Sometimes, parents have to just let their kids go and make mistakes. It works the other way around too. Thatâs the only way we can learn.â
I looked at her seriously. âWhat if his mistakes get himself killed?â
For once, Lily didnât have an answer.
âFancy seeing you here.â I turned to see Steph coming to sit beside me.
âWhat are you doing here?â I asked.
She smiled, giving me an obvious look. âItâs a bar. A bar that a lot of cops go to.â
I blushed, embarrassed. I found myself constantly embarrassing myself in front of Steph. It was an unfamiliar feeling. I didnât usually get embarrassed so easily.
âWhat are we drinking?â Lily asked, smiling at the two of us.
âIâll have what sheâs having,â Steph said.
Lily made a face. âThe girl is drinking tequila straight from a glass.â
Steph looked at me incredulously. âI thought you didnât like tequila.â
âI never said I didnât like tequila. I just knew no one from work should see me on tequila.â
âIâll take a vodka soda with a lime,â Steph said before turning to look at me. âEverything okay?â
My eyes clouded with tears as I looked at her. âNo, everything is terrible.â
